Montagu is the heart of Route 62. The village boast various styles of building, including Victorian, Edwardian, Georgian etc. It is located in the biggest soft fruit producing area in South Africa, and is surrounded by mountain. The village became famous for it's natural mineral springs, still found here today
ROUTE 62 is the historical route which was the main link between Port Elizabeth, the Garden Route and Cape Town before the N2 highway was built. It is not only offers a 70 km shorter option between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, but also runs through the most beautiful mountain passes, alternated by typical Klein Karoo vegetation, vineyards and fruit orchards. It passes through 14 beautifully preserved villages where time has stood still for 40 years.. The Robertson Wine Route just outside Montagu offers a diversity of estates ranging from estates with incredible Cape Dutch Homesteads to informal tastings in the most incredible gardens with history attached to every tree planted.
