DESCRIPTION

In the town of Robertson – situated on Route 62 and famous for its hospitality, award-winning wines and wine festivals from out of this world – the charming world of The Railway Shed is one of the first stops that welcome visitors en route from Cape Town.

A truly unique experience awaits. Sleeping in train coaches and dining and dancing in an old railway goods shed, visitors will be swept away to an almost forgotton era, but with all the comforts needed by the modern guest of course – even the cosmopolitan feel of a place that welcomes visitors of all colours and creeds and is listed on the gay-friendly Pink Map.

Guests can choose between anything from backpackers’ facilities to a honeymoon suite when they stay over. At the restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner – and cocktails and the finest local wines – are served. The Railway Bar offers the best entertainment in town, including karaoke, dancing to the rhythms of popular DJs and a pool table.

Accommodation

Rail 62 Train Lodge
The once booming railway industry ground to a halt in Robertson a few years back and its remnants are now the setting of the On Rail 62 Train Lodge. It promises a completely novel experience – sleeping in comfort in a train coach that truly is historical.

Ideal for motorbike groups, car clubs or groups of friends, the “first class”, “second class” or “third class” coaches (depending on the level of comfort and privacy you prefer) can collectively sleep up to a 100 people.

The Pinotage Premium coach, the Lichtenburg, the Omega, the Merlot Prestige and the Kibuts offer guests packpacker’s facilities (four people per room), three-bed and double rooms (some with en suite bathrooms) and even a honeymoon suite. Guests have access to a sauna and swimming pool and can spend time in the restaurant and bar to their heart’s delight.

dining

Soprano’s Restaurant & Ladies’ Bar
Situated on the famous Route 62, the Soprano’s Restaurant & Ladies’ Bar is one of The Railway Shed’s most popular attractions. Hosted in the old goods shed, the restaurant’s somewhat nostalgic but warm, welcoming atmosphere is created by the fusion of the old and the new – in retro art deco style!

Open from 09:00 until late, Soprano’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Coming with an empty stomach is advised, because wholesome is the key word here. Try out something different, such as the Camembert Samoosas or the much loved Quickle Burger, or traditional Bobotie and Shepherd’s Pie. Don’t forget the good old steak, food from the sea and the best spare ribs in town! Those who spent their night in one of the On Rail 62 Train Lodge beds can enjoy breakfast here for a nominal amount!

Added bonuses are the smoking area and ladies’ bar, where the cocktails, speciality brandies, international beers and finest local wines serve as a stunning treat. Rest assured that there’s ample (shady) space for boats, caravans and buses to be parked, and enough seating and hospitality to satisfy the needs of large groups that want to stop over for a great treat.

And, should you turn 50 soon, Soprano’s is the ideal venue for a 50th birthday party, done by the people who party best.
